Engadin marathon

The St. Moritz ski resort is a favoured winter holiday destination primarily for royal families and many famous film actors and musicians from around the world. The Winter Olympics have been held there twice, and the Alpine Ski World Championships as many as five times.

This magnificent town has also been visited by the infamous agent James Bond – scenes filmed in St. Moritz appeared in two films featuring his name.
We will explore this attraction during our trip, both on skis and on foot.

Travel Program

We will arrive in St. Moritz on Friday, taking a train from Zurich Airport. The train journey leads us through the beautiful Swiss landscape, offering breathtaking views of snowy mountains, frozen lakes, viaducts, and tunnels.

We will pass through several charming mountain villages and historical railway landmarks that are part of the Albula Railway. This is one of the most impressive and historic routes in the Swiss rail network. It is known for its unique scenery and technical complexity, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. A truly wonderful experience!

After settling into our hotel, we will visit the Expo in Pontresina. For Saturday’s activities, we offer various ideas: skiing along the marathon track, exploring St. Moritz, alpine skiing, or getting to know the bobsleigh track. St. Moritz is the birthplace of bobsleighing, and on this track, all interested visitors can ride together with local instructors. The alpine skiing equipment rental point and ski lift are located less than a kilometer from our hotel. On Sunday, the 57th Engadin Marathon will take place.

On Monday, we will travel from St. Moritz to Milan Airport on the Bernina Express train.

About the ski marathon

Engadin is the world’s largest free technique ski marathon, which will take place for the 57th time in 2027. It is one of Switzerland’s biggest mass sport events, attracting nearly 14,000 skiers from more than 65 countries every year.

The highly anticipated and festive marathon day is set for March 14. Participants can choose between two distances: 21 km and 42 km freestyle. Participants aged at least 17 years may take part in the 42 km distance. For the 21 km distance, participants must be at least 15 years old. Participation in the 21 km half-marathon is free of charge for all participants aged 15-16.

For those who prefer the classic style, the entire course is also equipped with a classic track, giving the skiers an opportunity to complete the marathon in their preferred style.

Marathon description

The Engadin marathon course is one of the easiest Worldloppet marathons in terms of it´s profile—the starting point is at a higher elevation from the sea level than the finish, and the terrain is mostly flat.

The race begins in Maloja, 1,820 meters above sea level. The first 12 km glide across two lakes, during that there’s plenty of space, meaning you can even ski with three of your friends side by side. These early kilometers provide breathtaking views of the valley and the snow-covered peaks of the Alps. Next, the course passes through the world-famous St. Moritz ski resort, followed by the biggest climb of the marathon.

One of the most unique sections of the route is the so-called “Mattress Hill”—a long but gentle downhill stretch that winds through a forest. To ensure safety, the trees along the course, both in the center and on the sides, are padded, which is where the name “Mattress Hill” comes from. The descent is long but not steep, allowing skiers to choose their own pace and enjoy the ride with confidence.

The second half of the course features a rolling terrain, winding up and down before finishing in the historic Alpine village of S-chanf (1,670 meters above sea level).
