Iceland is said to be the last place in the world where humans settled. Vikings discovered this unique island nation more than 1,100 years ago.
Today, Iceland is among the countries that receive more foreign tourists annually than they have residents. At the heart of it all is nature—raw and majestic. This is exactly what makes the Iceland ski marathon so special!
About the Ski Marathon
The Fossavatnsgangan ski marathon is one of the newest members of the Worldloppet series (since 2014). The marathon was first held in 1935, when only seven determined skiers took part, covering a distance of 18 km. Today, you can choose between 25 km and 50 km races.
We arrive in Iceland and spend two days exploring Reykjavík, the world’s northernmost capital. On Monday, after a morning arrival, you will have plenty of time to explore Reykjavík on your own. It is said to have some of the cleanest air in the world—worth taking a deep breath at every step!
Optionally, you can join an evening whale-watching tour or visit a lava show—both located near our hotel.
On Tuesday, our program includes the Golden Circle Tour—Þingvellir National Park, the beautiful Gullfoss waterfall, and the Geysir geothermal area. The second half of the day is spent at the Blue Lagoon.
On Wednesday, we travel towards Ísafjörður so that those interested can participate in the 25 km freestyle race on Thursday evening. The following day, we explore the surrounding area and other natural attractions.
The main marathon day is Saturday, April 17. Each year, around 450 skiers take part, with the record set in 2016 when 499 participants started. The course runs through nature between mountains, with ocean views in the distance and Lake Fossavatn nearby.
In April, the weather is already pleasantly spring-like, and nature begins to bloom. Locals celebrate the First Day of Summer around April 22, marking the start of summer according to the old Icelandic calendar. This holiday is movable and always falls on the first Thursday after April 18.
After the marathon, a lively after-party—Fossavatn Party—takes place on Saturday evening at the Torfnes Sports Hall, featuring a rich buffet and the award ceremony.

Trail description
Both distances are completed as a single full loop. The 50 km course begins with a gradual uphill climb over approximately 15 km. This is followed by a 10 km easier downhill section to the turnaround point, after which the course climbs again.
You can expect about 8 km of steady ascent to the highest point of the course (614 m), followed by another enjoyable 8 km downhill section. The final highlight is the famous Miðfellsháls climb, after which the last 6 km glide smoothly to the finish line.
You can explore the course profiles in more detail HERE. There will definitely be spots along the course where you’ll want to take out your phone and capture the scenery!
Both races count toward the Worldloppet series and can be recorded in your Worldloppet ski passport—your chance to stay inspired for years and collect international marathon experiences.
“Marathon trips are made special by shared experiences with like-minded people and the chance to relive them afterward. The drive from Reykjavík to Ísafjörður offers incredible views—no matter where you point your camera, it looks like a postcard,” shared Reet from Estonia.
Accommodation and catering
In Reykjavík, we stay at the modern and cozy Grandi by Center Hotel, located in the harbor area within walking distance of the city center and main attractions.

Both accommodations are four-star hotels offering rich buffet breakfasts. Rooms are double occupancy. Lunches and dinners will be arranged together.
