Standing proudly since 1986 on the finish arch is the Vasaloppet motto: “In our fathers’ tracks for future victories.”
The name Vasaloppet comes from King Gustav Vasa’s escape on skis in 1521, during which he defended his country. Thus, the marathon tradition has endured for over 100 years, allowging participants to ski along historic trails in the footsteps of the king.

About the marathon
Vasaloppet is the world’s oldest and largest ski marathon in terms of participants, first held in 1922. This is your chance to be part of history and tradition: “Hip-hip-hooray, Vasaloppet!”
In addition to the main Vasaloppet race, participants also have the opportunity to take part in a 30 km free technique marathon on February 28, which takes place in the evening darkness—an exciting experience on its own! While the minimum age for the 90 km race is 18, the Nattvasan marathon allows boys and girls as young as 11 to participate. This could be a great warm-up for the full 90 km race, whether with family, friends, or simply enjoying the adventure by yourself!
More than 50,000 ski enthusiasts take part in the various events of Vasaloppet’s ski week. Imagine this—over the course of seven days, participants consume 38,000 liters of delicious blueberry soup and about 180,000 cinnamon buns. A truly grand ski festival!
Since 2020, all finishers receive a medal. Before that, only those who finished within 50% of the winner’s time earned one. Vasaloppet has been running continuously since 1922, with organizers having to cancel the marathon due to lack of snow only three times—in 1932, 1934, and 1990.

Royal history, the diverse Nordic landscape, and the delicious blueberry soup generously offered at refreshment stations make Vasaloppet a truly unique skiing event.
Every finisher receives a proud medal at the finish line and a diploma afterward. By taking part in the race, you contribute to the continuation of tradition and carry history forward—just as the Vasaloppet motto, displayed on the finish arch since 1986, states: “In our fathers’ tracks for future victories.”
Just imagine… In 2022, three generations completed Vasaloppet together: Grandfather Toivo, his son Tanel, and grandson Willem. Their story is a testament to history in motion and serves as a true inspiration!

Ski maintenance
You don’t have to worry at all about preparing your skis—we’ve made it incredibly convenient for you! Our partner, the local Leksand Ski Club waxing team, will prepare your skis exactly to your preferences and, quite literally, deliver them freshly waxed to your accommodation’s doorstep.
The most well-known active skier from Leksand Ski Club is Anna Dyvik, who competed in the Swedish sprint team at the Beijing Olympics. One of the club’s wax technicians was also part of the Swedish national cross-country ski team at the same Olympics.
They know the local conditions inside out and will wax your skis based on real-time weather and snow conditions on the Vasaloppet course, rather than relying on a forecast made days earlier. Only the best-tested waxes for the actual snow conditions will be used. Participants will receive detailed information on how to book this waxing service.
The Vasaloppet Triple Challenge
The Vasaloppet ski marathon is part of a three-event challenge called Vasaloppstrippeln, where participants complete the Vasaloppet course in three different ways over the course of a year: running, cycling, and skiing.
You can choose whether to do 30 km, 45 km, or 90 km for each event, with the mountain bike marathon even offering a 94 km course. Completing all three events in a single year is a remarkable achievement—so much so that, in the most active year in history, only 297 people worldwide managed to accomplish it!
